How to Prepare for your next Brand Photography Session: A Stress-Free Guide to Looking & Feeling Your Best

So, you’ve booked your brand photoshoot — yay! Now, what’s next? Whether you’re a seasoned pro or this is your first time stepping in front of the camera, preparing for a brand photoshoot can feel a bit daunting. But don’t worry, I’ve got your back! With a little planning and some insider tips, you’ll be camera-ready and confident when shoot day rolls around.

Here’s your complete guide on how to prepare for your brand photoshoot so you can make the most of it and walk away with images that truly reflect you and your brand!

1. Define Your Brand’s Vibe

Before anything else, you need to be clear on the vibe and message you want your brand photos to convey. Are you going for fun and playful? Clean and professional? Bold and edgy? The clearer you are on your brand’s personality, the easier it’ll be to create a cohesive look throughout your photos.

Pro Tip: If you have a brand mood board, now’s the time to pull it out! If you don’t, spend some time gathering visual inspiration that feels in line with your brand — think Pinterest boards, Instagram saves, or even color palettes that speak to you.

2. Pick Your Outfits (Yes, Plural!)

Choosing what to wear can be one of the trickiest parts, but don’t stress! The key is to choose outfits that are not only flattering but also align with your brand’s identity. Depending on the length of your shoot, you might want to plan for multiple looks to capture different sides of your business.

Outfit Planning Tips:

  • Stick to solid colors or subtle patterns to avoid anything that distracts from you.

  • Choose outfits that are comfortable and give you the confidence to shine.

  • Consider layering! Jackets, blazers, scarves, and other accessories add depth and variety.

  • Coordinate your outfits with your brand’s color palette for consistency across your visuals.

Don’t forget to bring extras! Jewelry, shoes, and other accessories can make a huge difference in how your photos turn out.

3. Create a Shot List

A shot list is a lifesaver when it comes to ensuring you capture all the must-have images. It’s a list of the specific types of photos you need for your website, social media, marketing materials, etc. Sit down and think about where you’ll be using these images and what kind of shots would serve you best.

Do you need a new headshot? Photos of you working? Shots of your products? Maybe behind-the-scenes images that show off your process? A mix of close-ups, lifestyle shots, and wide images will give you plenty of options to work with later.

Pro Tip: Think about your website layout and the kinds of images that will look great on your homepage, about page, and blog.

4. Prep Your Props

Props are a great way to add personality to your photos, especially if they’re related to your business. Think about items that tell your brand story — whether that’s your laptop and planner (for those “hard at work” shots), your products, or anything else that’s part of your day-to-day routine.

The goal is to make your photos feel authentic to you, so choose props that help convey your unique process or personality.

5. Scout Your Location(s)

Where you shoot matters just as much as what you’re wearing. The location should reflect your brand’s vibe and provide a backdrop that complements (but doesn’t overpower) you in the images. Whether it’s a bright, open office space, an outdoor park, or a cozy coffee shop, pick a location that feels true to your business.

If you’re unsure, chat with your photographer (hey, that’s me!) about location ideas. We can brainstorm together and find the perfect spot.

6. Get Your Beauty Game On

While it’s important to look your best, don’t feel like you need to go overboard with makeup or hair styling. The goal is to look like the best version of yourself — polished, but still authentic. A professional hair and makeup artist can be a great investment if you want that extra confidence boost, but it’s totally up to you!

In the days leading up to your shoot:

  • Get plenty of rest (hello, fresh face!).

  • Stay hydrated.

  • Stick to your regular skincare routine (now’s not the time to try out a new product!).

  • Avoid any drastic changes to your hair color or style right before your shoot.

7. Relax & Trust the Process

This might be the most important tip of all: relax! Your brand photoshoot is meant to be fun and creative. If you’ve taken the time to prepare, you’re going to feel confident and ready to nail it. Trust in your photographer’s direction (again, that’s me!) and know that it’s our job to make you look great. We’ll guide you through poses, make sure the lighting is perfect, and help you feel comfortable in front of the camera.

Pro Tip: Bring along some upbeat music to play during the shoot! It helps lighten the mood and gets you in the zone.

8. Make It Fun!

At the end of the day, this shoot is all about YOU and your business. Bring your energy, personality, and unique spark to the session. The more fun you’re having, the more it’ll shine through in your photos.

Wrapping It Up

Preparing for your brand photoshoot doesn’t have to be overwhelming — it’s all about getting clear on your brand, organizing the details, and showing up ready to have fun. Remember, these images are going to tell your story and connect you with your dream clients, so take the time to plan and get excited!
