One of the questions I get asked most when planning a brand shoot is: “Do we need to hire models?” The answer? It depends. Whether you’re working with professional models or your client is the model, there’s a strategy to making the most of your session—and that’s exactly what I’m walking you through today.

Working With Models: What to Know

Models are a great option when you want a very specific look or lifestyle representation for your brand. They’re often comfortable in front of the camera and can move through poses quickly and naturally, which can really help keep things efficient.

My tips when working with models:

• Have a detailed shot list ready. This helps everyone stay on track and ensures you capture every angle or setup needed for your brand assets.

• Give direction early on. Don’t assume the model knows the brand vibe—set the tone right away.

• Keep it collaborative. Some of the best moments come when models feel free to move or interact naturally with the product or space.

My Go-To Poses for Models

When time is tight (as it often is!), I always keep a few go-to poses in my back pocket that work across the board:

• The Walk + Laugh: Perfect for lifestyle shoots. It feels effortless, and movement adds energy.

• The Intentional Pause: Think: adjusting a bag strap, looking down at hands, or sipping a drink. Natural stillness goes a long way.

• The Over-the-Shoulder Look: Works great to break the fourth wall a bit while showing off product details or wardrobe elements.

• Connection Shots: If your model is interacting with a product, space, or even another person, I like to go for authentic gestures—passing an item, a quick glance, or shared laughter.

When the Client (AKA You!) Is the Model

If you’re not using hired models and the client is the face of the brand (which is super common—and awesome!), don’t stress. Some of my absolute favorite shoots have been with brand owners front and center.

Here’s how I make it easy for them:

• I walk them through every pose and prompt, step by step. No modeling experience required!

• We plan ahead. When you work with me, I send over a complete photo style guide that breaks down everything: wardrobe suggestions, prop ideas, shot inspiration, and how we’ll use the images.

• We stick to a clear schedule. Each client receives a custom shoot itinerary that maps out the entire day—locations, timing, shot list, and even when to hydrate and take breaks.
